Surveys are commonly divided into 3 categories, Mortgage Valuation (which is not really a survey!), HomebuyerReports (an economy package), and Building Survey which is the most detailed survey which can be undertaken for a house buyer.

All the surveys are based on a visual inspection without causing damage to the property and within the constraints of the normal levels of occupation of a residential property. In other words the degree of moving furniture and carpets is limited.
